U.S. MANUAL WATCH · 14 AUGUST 2026

Porsche promises U.S. manuals into the next decade

Porsche Cars North America CEO Timo Resch said on 14 August 2026 that the company would try to sell manual transmissions for as long as law and customer demand permit—immediately turning the newly returned six-speed 911 Carrera S into a statement of intent, not a farewell edition.

The promise has two locks on it, and both matter. Porsche will keep the three-pedal choice only while buyers keep ordering it and regulations keep allowing the company to certify and sell it. For now, the American appetite is unusually strong: Resch told Road & Track that more than half of current 911 GT3 buyers choose a manual, rising to 80 percent for the GT3 Touring.

That demand helped Porsche Cars North America make the case for a car that was not in the original plan: the North America-only 2027 911 Carrera S MT Package. Porsche says the six-speed model arrived after the updated Carrera S had initially moved to its eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic alone. PDK means Porsche Doppelkupplung—Porsche’s transmission with two clutches and automated gear changes.

You can be assured that we will try to offer manual transmissions as long as we are legally allowed to, and as long as there’s customer demand.

THE CHOICE IN THE CARRERA S

Six speeds by hand, or eight by PDK

Switch between the two on a phone; they sit together on a wider screen. Porsche’s published material supports the same engine output and rear-wheel-drive layout for both. It does not supply a like-for-like acceleration figure here, so we do not manufacture one.

WHY “LEGALLY ALLOWED” MATTERS

The gearbox is tested as part of the emissions-certified car

There is no U.S. rule in the cited record that simply bans a clutch pedal. The pressure works through vehicle certification. Federal test procedure 40 CFR § 86.128-79 specifies how a manual car is driven during emissions testing, including clutch use and representative shift points. A manual powertrain is therefore its own testable configuration, not merely a lever swapped into an already approved automatic car.

The regulatory target is also moving. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s rule for model years 2027 and later sets tighter multi-pollutant standards for light- and medium-duty vehicles, phased in through model year 2032. Porsche must make each configuration comply as those requirements apply; whether the engineering and certification work remains worthwhile also depends on how many customers order it.

The honest reading of Resch’s caveat is narrower than “manuals are about to be outlawed”: regulation can constrain which powertrain combinations Porsche can certify, while present technology already keeps the manual away from the 911’s current T-Hybrid system.
